Following todays (8th June 2009) announcement from Apple's WWDC 09, TomTom the in car sat nav market leader has made its own announcement - the release of its TomTom navigation software for the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS
The tomtom software will be available for the iPhone 3G and 3GS, available soon to download from the App Store. Presumably it will be sub menued so you can download different map regions, ie city level - london - or country - UK etc, as full worldwide or european/USA would use up most of the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS on board memory....
There will also be a TomTom car mounting kit that offers secure docking, enhanced GPS reception (unclear yet as whether this is by means of an additional SIRF chipset - the small disc at the back may be an external gps to boost the iPhone 3GS signal - or simply that the iPhones onbaord GPS chip will always function better when taking direct power not from its own depleting battery, clear voice instructions and hands-free calling - while charging the iPhone 3GS at the same time - it looks like tomtom have jumped down the windscreen sucker mount route however, and we shall see what we can do about that with Brodit to get it mounted onto your cars dashboard area for a full on car kit solution for the iPhone 3GS, or indeed whether we can better what tomtom have announced!
